ISO 45001 – Occupational Health and Safety
(Effective March 12, 2018) formerly OHSAS 18001
Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Management Systems
ISO 45001, effective March 12, 2018 (formerly OHSAS 18001), is an International Standard that specifies requirements for an occupational health and safety (OH&S) management system. It provides guidance for its use to enable a company (even one with low-risk operations) to improve its performance and prevent injury and ill-health.
ISO 45001 has been written to apply even to small businesses, regardless of size, type. Its requirements are designed to be easily integrated into other management processes, ISO 9001 and 14001.
Other aspects of worker health and safety can been integrated such as wellness/wellbeing and may be required by local/state legal requirements. The ISO 45001 standard does not specifically address issues such as product safety, property damage or environmental impact. The ISO 45001 standard’s primary goal is to eliminate or minimize the risk of harm to people.
The benefits of implementing ISO 45001:
It enables your company to improve it OH&S performance
Improve ability to respond to regulatory compliance issues
Reduce downtime and costs of disruption to operations
Reduce the cost of your company insurance premiums
Reduce absenteeism and employee turnover rates
Recognition and differentiation as achieving an international benchmark for OH&S
Greater customer satisfaction for those customers who are concerned about your performance and social responsibilities.
ISO 45001 can be easily integrated with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 because the Annex SL structure is the same for all these standards.
