R2:2013 – Electronics
Responsible Recycling Management System
The R2 standard is the leading standard for electronics repair and recycling. The R2 Standard is rigorously and independently audited, emphasizing quality, safety, and transparency. Over 530 facilities are currently R2 certified in 21 countries, with more added every day. While R2 is a stand-alone certification, the R2 process must be implemented concurrently with an environment, health and safety management system (ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001). Sustainable Electronics Recycling International (SERI) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the responsible reuse, repair and recycling of electronic products. SERI is the housing-body for the R2 Standard and works with a coalition of partners to raise awareness of electronics repair and recycling issues around the world.
The R2 Standard is a way to identify, aggregate, distribute and monitor best-practices in electronics repair and recycling. R2 creates market incentives for recycling facilities to implement environmental, health and safety procedures that directly benefit their workers, communities, and the environment. Operational improvements, record-keeping and safety are a market differentiator for prospective customers.
R2 Focus Materials, also referred to as “FMs”, are materials in end-of-life electronic equipment that warrant greater care during recycling, refurbishing, materials recovery, energy recovery, incineration, and/or disposal due to their toxicity or other potential adverse worker health and safety, public health, or environmental effects that can arise if the materials are managed without appropriate safeguards.
Focus Materials contain:
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)
CRT glass, CRT fines, coatings, and frit
Whole or shredded circuit boards
