What is ISO 9001:2015 Clause 4.2?

Clause 4.2 of ISO 9001:2015 centers on “Understanding the Needs and Expectations of Interested Parties.” It emphasizes the importance of identifying and comprehending the requirements and expectations of various stakeholders who are affected by or can affect an organization’s quality management system.

What are the Objectives of Clause 4.2?

Identifying Interested Parties

Organizations need to identify the stakeholders or interested parties relevant to their operations. These parties might include customers, suppliers, employees, regulatory bodies, shareholders, and the community among others.

Understanding their Needs and Expectations

Once identified, organizations must analyze and understand the needs, requirements, expectations, and concerns of these stakeholders. This involves considering factors such as product or service quality expectations, compliance requirements, delivery expectations, ethical considerations, and any other relevant requirements or desires.

Addressing Relevance and Impact

Organizations need to determine which needs and expectations of these interested parties are relevant to the quality management system and how meeting these needs will impact the organization’s ability to provide products or services that meet customer and regulatory requirements.

What is the Purpose of Clause 4.2?

The purpose of Clause 4.2 is to ensure that an organization doesn’t only focus on internal processes and quality objectives but also considers the broader network of stakeholders and their needs. ISO 9001:2008 Clause 4.2

Previous versions of ISO 9001, such as ISO 9001:2008, did mention the importance of considering customer requirements and satisfaction but did not elaborate extensively on identifying and addressing the needs and expectations of a broader range of interested parties or stakeholders.

The revision in 2015 marked a significant shift in the ISO 9001 standard. The inclusion of Clause 4.2 (“Understanding the Needs and Expectations of Interested Parties”) was part of a more comprehensive approach to quality management.
